Phat Cat’s & The Bricks

Two clubs. One destination. One community.

Welcome to the next chapter of Phat Cat’s in Second Life. This is the story of a place to dance, listen, talk, meet people and, sometimes, simply sit for an hour and feel at home.

Whether you remember Phat Cat’s from years ago or are walking through our doors for the first time, you belong here.

The long story: why the name matters

Phat Cat’s has a long history in Second Life as an elegant jazz-and-dancing destination. Over the years people came here for the music, for special evenings, for friendships, for romances, and for the unmistakable feeling of dressing up and going somewhere special.

That history belongs to the people who made it: performers who sang or played, DJs who found just the right song, hosts who greeted arriving guests, couples who danced, and residents who kept returning. Some remember a favorite song. Others remember the person they met on the dance floor. The venue means something different to each of them.

Like many beloved virtual places, Phat Cat’s changed over time. Different eras brought different people, designs and circumstances. Stories about exact dates, past ownership and earlier closings may differ, and we would rather acknowledge that uncertainty than invent a neat history that overlooks someone’s contribution.

We honor what came before without claiming to have created every part of it. The best way to respect that legacy is to give it a worthwhile future.

Why Phat Cat’s came back

It came back because the experience is worth preserving. Second Life has plenty of places to teleport to, but the places people truly remember are built by community, atmosphere and shared moments.

We believe there is still room for an elegant ballroom where music matters, where conversation is welcome, and where a visitor can find a familiar face. The return is not about pretending time stood still. It is about bringing the spirit of Phat Cat’s forward.

That means a beautiful venue, live entertainment, DJs, updated visitor information, a public events calendar, a welcoming team, community activities and an effort to make ordinary evenings enjoyable—not only grand reopening nights.

Our ambition is simple, even if delivering it takes continual work: be somewhere people want to return to tomorrow.

A personal word from Jacky and me

Phat Cat’s is not simply a project we wanted to put online. For Jacky Maroosh and me, Doktur Shepherd, bringing it back is about giving people a place where they can feel welcome, enjoy beautiful music, reconnect with friends and create memories of their own.

We did not set out to claim every moment of Phat Cat’s long history as our own. Those memories belong to the residents, performers and people who built this community before us. We respect their work and we want that spirit to be recognizable in what we create today.

As owners, Jacky and I are personally and deeply involved in both Phat Cat’s Ballroom and The Bricks. We want the Ballroom to retain the gracious, romantic character people associate with the Phat Cat’s name, while The Bricks gives friends another place to gather with a different energy and range of music.

Our goal is not perfection on the first day or an impressive opening followed by an empty room. We want steady improvement: a calendar people can trust, performers treated with respect, friendly staff, useful information and guests who feel noticed.

Most of all, we want everyone—from longtime Phat Cat’s regulars to someone making a first visit tonight—to feel that this place has room for them. The next chapter is not only ours. It belongs to the community that chooses to make it home.

What we hope guests will remember

We hope you remember a warm welcome more than a rule, a beautiful song more than a technical detail, and the people you met more than the number of avatars in the room. The atmosphere is only as good as the way we treat one another.

Bringing Romance Back — Hand in Hand

There was a time when a night in Second Life could feel like stepping into a love song. The lights were low, the music was soft, and one invitation to dance might become a memory you carried for years. A gentle waltz, a quiet conversation, the warmth of someone waiting for you on the dance floor—those moments are worth keeping alive.

Ballrooms are often seen as rivals, each competing for the same dancers, singers, and special evenings. But romance was never meant to be a competition. It grows when people open their doors, welcome one another, and share something beautiful.

That is why Jacky Maroosh and Doktur Shepherd, owners of Phat Cat’s, are joining hands with Persia, General Manager of Frank’s Jazz Club. We believe the magic of Second Life deserves more than separate dance floors and competing calendars. It deserves people willing to come together for the love of music, elegance, friendship, and romance.

And what about Dok and Persia? Some guests have noticed a little sparkle when they are together. Is there a romance unfolding, or is it simply two people who know how to bring a little magic to the dance floor? They are keeping that answer to themselves. Perhaps a little mystery is part of the romance.

We dream of evenings when strangers become friends, friends become dance partners, and dance partners sometimes discover something wonderful. Of a favorite melody beginning just as two people find each other. Of a place where you can arrive alone and never feel out of place—or arrive holding someone's hand and forget the rest of the world for a little while.

Phat Cat’s treasures the timeless elegance of a classic ballroom, while Frank’s brings its own more modern style to a romantic night out. Each has its own music, personality, and special kind of magic. We are not trying to make them the same. We are celebrating what makes each beautiful, while joining hands to keep romance alive across Second Life.

Two beloved ballrooms. Many beautiful stories. One shared wish: to make Second Life fall in love with romance all over again.

The Ballroom: the heart of Phat Cat’s

The Ballroom is the elegant, romantic center of Phat Cat’s: a setting for dancing, listening and conversation that feels like a genuine evening out. It is a place to bring a partner or to arrive on your own, listen for a while and meet someone new.

Jazz, swing, vocal standards, crooners, romantic favorites, waltzes and tasteful classics help shape its identity. Our entertainment calendar brings individual live singers, DJs and special events; styles vary by performer, and event descriptions are the best guide for what is on tonight.

Elegant or formal evening attire is encouraged for regular Ballroom nights. Theme events may differ. We care more about courtesy and the atmosphere you help create than about judging somebody’s wardrobe.

We ask guests to respect the active dance floor, allow room for couples to move, and be considerate during live performances. If you came alone, you are still welcome. A solo visitor is not a second-class guest.

The Bricks: the other side of the night

The Bricks has its own personality. Where the Ballroom is elegant and romantic, The Bricks is more relaxed, energetic and musically flexible. It offers a different way to spend time with friends, catch entertainment and enjoy the Phat Cat’s region.

It is not an overflow afterthought or an inferior version of the Ballroom. It exists because different nights call for different moods. Sometimes you want a slow dance under soft lights. Sometimes you want a livelier set and a more casual atmosphere.

When the Ballroom is busy, The Bricks can also provide somewhere pleasant to enjoy your evening rather than just wait around. Check our current calendar to see what is happening in each space.

Why two clubs?

Two venues let one destination serve two distinct musical and social experiences without forcing either to give up its identity. You can choose the mood that suits you—and change your mind later in the evening.

The people, music and community

A ballroom cannot be built out of walls and decorations alone. Singers, DJs, hosts, greeters, managers, merchants and visitors make the difference between an attractive location and a living place.

Our artists directory introduces the performers who help create those evenings. The staff page helps guests find the people who welcome them and keep the experience organized. We want performers to have accurate listings and images, and for guests to know whom they are coming to hear.

The events calendar is the best place to check the latest advertised performers and times. Plans can change, so consult the live listing rather than rely on an old notice or a remembered schedule.

RomantiCats and staying in touch

We want friendships to continue beyond one evening. The RomantiCats community gives residents a way to stay connected with Phat Cat’s, and the newsletter offers another way to hear about news and events.

The marketplace and mall

There is more to discover than the dance floor. Our shopping and marketplace bring another reason to explore the region, browse stores and support the creative residents who contribute to Second Life’s culture.

Your first visit

Come as you are—or dress for the occasion. Check the calendar, find the venue you want, and settle in. You do not need to arrive with a group or already know anybody. Say hello to a host if you have questions. Give performers room to do their work, and enjoy yourself.

Our community depends on kindness and respect for privacy. Please be considerate toward guests, staff and performers. No one should feel pressured to dance, chat or share personal information.

Questions guests ask most often

Is this the original Phat Cat’s?

This is a new chapter for the familiar Phat Cat’s name and ballroom tradition. We respect the venue’s earlier history and the people who shaped it; we do not claim every earlier era as our own.

Who brought it back?

Jacky Maroosh and Doktur Shepherd are behind this current chapter of Phat Cat’s Ballroom and The Bricks, with the help of staff, performers and the community.

What is the difference between the Ballroom and The Bricks?

The Ballroom is elegant, romantic and rooted in the Phat Cat’s dance tradition. The Bricks offers a more casual, energetic alternative with a broader range of moods and music.

Do I need a partner to visit?

Absolutely not. Come alone, with a partner or with friends. Many people just enjoy the music and atmosphere.

Do I need formal clothes?

Elegant attire is encouraged in the Ballroom, but check the individual event listing for any theme or specific expectations. The Bricks is a more casual venue.

Are there real live performers?

Yes. Check the events calendar and artists directory for published live singer and DJ appearances.

Where can I find tonight’s entertainment?

Visit the current events calendar or ask a staff member.

Can I join, perform or help?

Visit RomantiCats to connect, or the staff application page for available opportunities. You can also contact us.

Will things keep changing?

Yes. We expect to keep listening, improving and refining both venues. We want a place that works week after week, not merely a beautiful opening-day photograph.

What we hope this place becomes

We hope Phat Cat’s becomes one of those names that brings a smile when someone mentions it; a place where people remember a favorite song, a first dance, a new friend, a reunion or an unexpected conversation.

The Ballroom and The Bricks are different places with one shared purpose: to give people a reason to spend time together. If you are here, you are part of that story.

Welcome to Phat Cat’s. Welcome to The Bricks. Welcome home.
